A Bobby-Car is a ride-on toy car for toddlers aged twelve months and older. It is usually a red, approximately 60 centimeters long and about 40 centimeters high, four-wheeled plastic car without pedals. Small children can move themselves forward by pushing off with their feet. It has been produced in Germany by the company BIG-Spielwarenfabrik since 1972.
In addition to the Classic model, there are also models such as New, Neo, Next, Super, Quad, Junior, Ferrari 355 GTS, Jaguar XK8, Smart-Roadster, Ford Focus, Opel Astra G, Baby VW T1, VW Beetle, Baby Mercedes (AMG GT, AMG GTR, AMG SLS, SLK, Actros Truck), Bobby Mog, Baby Porsche, and Lightning McQueen.
As "Bobby-Car" is a protected trademark of BIG-Spielwarenfabrik, similar vehicles from other manufacturers are referred to as ride-on cars ("Rutschauto" in German). Only vehicles from BIG-Spielwarenfabrik are allowed to participate in official Bobby-Car races.
Bobby-Car races have been around for 30 years:
The story begins in 1972 when the Bobby-Car was introduced as a new children's toy at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. It was invented by the toy manufacturer and engineer Ernst A. Bettag.
Over the following years, the small - usually red - ride-on car from BIG became increasingly popular and has since become the first vehicle for many children.
And so, 21 years later, on May 20, 1993 - on Father's Day - in the small town of Silberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, a very special hobby was born: Bobby-Car racing.
These soapbox-like races were licensed in 1998 by the Bobby-Car-Club Deutschland e.V. in cooperation with BIG-Spielwarenfabrik. The championship's qualifying races are held not only in Germany but also in Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, and France.
The organizing association for the championships since the 2011 season is the Bobby-Car-Sport-Verband
